237 steel mills have completed or are currently implementing ultra-low-emission reforms, the state-owned China Securities Journal reported Saturday, citing the China Iron and Steel Industry Association (CISA), Reuters reports.
This is equivalent to approximately 650 million tonnes of crude steel, accounting for 61% of China's crude steel production capacity.
CISA also finalized a draft framework for achieving peak carbon emissions targets for the steel industry.
China is the largest steel producer in the world and accounts for 15% of China's total greenhouse gas emissions. China, the world's largest producer of greenhouse gases, aims to peak emissions by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2060.
