European steel producers tried to raise prices for HDG (hot deep galvanizing) and CRC (cold-rolled coil) early last week, arguing that this was due to more vigorous demand, especially in the sectors related to the automotive industry.
ArcelorMittal has set the price for hot-dip galvanized deliveries to the Nordic countries at €1,160 per ton since January 12, €30-50 per ton higher than the previous level. At the same time, the company "aims" at a price of €1,160 per ton for deliveries to the Italian market, although regional buyers clearly make it clear that such prices are still unacceptable. Hungarian producer Dunaferr raised selling prices for HDG by €60/t to €1,180/t.
Also, as of January 11-12, there was an increase in prices for cold rolled steel in Italy and North-West Europe to €1,040 and €1,057.50 per ton, respectively.
Market participants are a little surprised that, despite the previously achieved "strong" prices under contracts for the supply of hot-rolled coils for the first half of the year, some European steelmakers in this sector are behaving slightly "slowed down". ArcelorMittal hasn't raised prices - perhaps not yet. At the same time, Dunaferr is targeting the level of €920 per ton for deliveries of hot-rolled coils to Germany - before the holidays, the lowest sales of this material from this manufacturer were at the level of €880 per ton, but at the same time, some sales from Dunaferr were close to the € mark. 900 per ton.
The current situation for hot-rolled coils is assessed by market participants as unfavorable - composite price indices are creeping down, because. resumption of trading activity after the holidays has not happened yet. The Italian price index for HRC sank €5.25 to €818.25/t, while the NW Europe index slipped €1.50 to €904.50/t.
