Global stainless steel production is up 10.6% year-on-year in 2021 to 56.3 million tonnes, according to data released on March 14 by the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF).
Production increased in all ISSF-controlled regions, with Asia excluding China and South Korea seeing the largest growth of 21.2% year-on-year to 7.8 million tonnes. However, this amounted to only 13.8% of the total.
Production in China rose by 1.6% year on year to 30.6 million tonnes in 2021, accounting for 54.4% of total global production.
Double-digit year-on-year increases were also seen in Europe, up 13.6% to 7.2 million tons, and in the US, up 10.4%, to 2.4 million tons.
Production in the “other” category, which includes Brazil, Russia, South Africa, South Korea and Indonesia, also increased by 42% year-on-year to 8.3 million tonnes in 2021.
Fourth-quarter production was down 2.9% year-over-year but rose 1.2% qoq to 13.7 million tonnes.
Production in China fell 12.5% ??year-on-year to 7.2 million tonnes in the quarter, although it was up 0.3% from the third quarter.
US fourth-quarter production also fell 5.3% year-on-year and 2.5% quarter-on-quarter to 538,000 tons. Production in the rest of Asia and Europe increased by 10.1% and 2.8% year on year, respectively, to 2 million tons and 1.8 million tons.
Quarterly production in other regions increased by 23.5% compared to the same period last year, but decreased by 0.2% compared to the third quarter to 2.2 million tons.
